The SJRYC Board of Directors reviewed recent years’ financial information along with 2017’s financial information thus far and the proposed 2018 Budget at their regular meeting on September 21st. Part of the process was to itemize some of the higher cost expenditures that have occurred over the past several years: replacement and repair of 20 year old HVAC units, the kitchen stove line, the pool heat exchanger, the dishwashing machine, the ice machine, continuing the process of upgrading the POS and security systems, and clubhouse building repair/maintenance to name some of them. These are all in addition to the regular operational costs of the SJRYC which increase 1-2% per year and include cost of goods, services, and labor. This must all be balanced against revenue generated from use of the Club by our members. Menu and beverage prices have generally remained the same over the past few years.
The Club’s nearly exclusive source of revenue is our dues. While regatta parties generate some revenue, their revenue is dependent on the weather and public attendance. Revenue from initiation fees also is dependent on membership turnover and meeting our cap of 540 members. Use of these variable revenues when building a budget is unreliable at best.
Adequate finances also must be set aside for preservation of the SJRYC’s unique historical/nautical but aging facilities. They require timely and constant upgrades, repair and maintenance. Equally important, our mission is to provide our members with high quality and value from their membership whether it’s use of the clubhouse, the pool, and the Rhumbline Bar, as well as their associated events, activities and entertainment. Due to careful financial oversight, we are proud to provide our membership with bright colored new outdoor furniture and umbrellas at the Rhumbline Bar and new chaise lounge chairs at poolside next year.
Therefore, the Board of Directors discussed all aspects of dues use, the recommendation from the Budget & Finance Committee, and considered that there was no dues increase for 2017. The Board then voted to increase the 2018 dues $100 or approximately $8.00 per month for each category of membership:
Single Membership: $540 > $640
Family Membership: $795 > $895
Senior Membership: $485 > $585
Senior Family Membership: $570 > $670
Single Parent Membership: $645 > $745
Initiation Fee for 2018 remains at $1200
