The SJRYC River Rats Swim Team offers a fun-filled season of competitive swimming as well as daily stroke instruction for swimmers ages 4-18. Our experienced coaches, Paul Hirn and Lindsay Marohn , manage practice sessions each weekday morning (swim meets on Wednesday mornings) during the season, early June through late July. Swimmer’s practice with their age group/ability level, from young beginners to very competitive, at one of the practices from 8:00 to noon.
SJRYC is a member of the MAPSC swim conference, a group of teams from private clubs in the Michiana area. We have a weekly dual meet, home or away, every Wednesday morning early June through mid July, and then as a culminating event at the end of the season, a Conference Championship meet in late July. It truly is a wonderful summertime experience for the kids as well as adults – a great way to make new friends! Contact Coach Hirn at firstname.lastname@example.org or Maria Jordan at email@example.com for more information.
Pre Swim Team: Pre Swim Team is basically swim lessons for our beginner group of swimmers that swim from 11:00-12:00 every day of practice. Children are placed in groups of no more than six swimmers and receive individualized instruction based on their developmental swim level. Once enrollment numbers are established, swimmers will be placed in an appropriate group that will practice from either 11:00-11:30 or 11:30-12:00. Any of these swimmers that the coach deems able to participate in a swim meet may do so. Also available for the youngest swimmers will be two half sessions, from June 8-June 26 and from June 29-July 17. Participants must be a club member, age three, able to follow instructions, and fully toilet trained.
Swim Meets: All swimmers will be entered in the meet line-up unless the coach is informed of a conflict. Swimmers unable to attend a meet must let Coach Hirn know (via email) by 5pm Monday so that they can plan accordingly. Swimmers must swim in at least 2 conference swim meets to be able to swim at conference.
Parent Volunteers are very much needed to run a successful swim program. Parents are needed at home meets as timers, scorers, marshals, etc. Additionally, some parents may volunteer to make ribbons the day following swim meets if necessary.
For away meets, some parents are needed as timers and as helpers at the score table for the host team. Please do not hesitate to volunteer because you are new to the swimming scene. None of it is hard to learn and it really is more fun to be involved. Additionally, the “Swim Moms” can always use help from other parents.
“Swim Moms” – Each year two to three parents volunteer as “Swim Moms.” These individuals help coordinate the swim program and assist the Swim Coaches as needed.
